08-09-21 is a collection of three ambient pieces, inspired by generative music pioneers and lockdown life.
All recorded on 08/09/21, these tracks are a change of pace for Ayala, exploring the slower corners of his sound. This release celebrates generative music, in which the composer creates randomly playing synthetic instruments and records the output. That’s why these pieces each have “render” and a time in their names - no two playbacks could sound the same.
1 (Generative for Viewfinder, 9:55 pm render) originated as a generative piece to accompany Sydney sculptor Joel Adler’s Viewfinder, exhibited at Sculptures by the Sea 2019. In this render, slow metallic rhythms underpin pulses of synthetic bass plucks and murky choir swells.
2 (Lacuna, 2:28 pm render) pivots towards freeflowing textures and rushes of chords and warped percussion. Here, stretched chords carry the listener through a thickening soundscape over which digital pianos and analog synths pluck and ring.
3 (Gentle Giant/Quiet Earth, 4:42 pm render) opens with sparse clapping and whispers, swelling with saturated synthesisers before giving way to droning bass, long metallic swells and a steady, pulsing kick drum.
